What Matters? September 28, 2009

At the beginning we got our Chapter 1 Unit Tests back. Hopefully you guys did good! :)
We went over the questions most people had troubles with; one from the signifigant digits, and another from the conversions. Lesson plan followed with the next unit...

What is matter?
-Anything that has mass and occupies space
-Matter can exist in many different states, the most common are
  • solid, liquid, gas
  • plasma, aqueous, amorphous
(*note: most common is plasma, coming from lightning bolts)
-Solids: Holds one shape and has a definite volume
-Liquid: Can change shape, but has definite volume
-Gas: Can change shape and volume
-Aqueous: Something dissolved in water

PHYSICAL CHANGES
-Involves changing shape or state of matter
  • crushing, tearing, ect.
-No new substances are formed
  • boiling water, cutting wood, smashing cars
(*note: changes from a gas to a solid, and a solid to a gas it sublimation)

PHASE CHANGES
-Changing from a solid to a gas can often be confused as a chemical change
  • chemicals remain the same
-During the melting process, chemicals usually follow this path:
(***REFER TO GRAPH FROM IN CLASS NOTES)

CHEMICAL CHANGE
-New substances are formed
-Properties of matter change
  • conductivity, acidity, colour, ect
  • e.g iron rusting, burning wood, digesting food

CONVERSION OF MATTER
-In physical and chemical changes, matter is neither created nor destroyed..EVER period.
-this is called the conversion matter

2H2 -------------------> 2H20

4 Hydrogen atoms 4 hydrogen atoms
+ 2 oxygen atoms + 2 oxygen atoms

  1. Good to see you guys are keeping up with the blog. One suggestion I'll give you is to spend a couple of minutes looking for clips on YouTube. There are dozens of them. Or if you really want to be creative, make your own video (and post it on YouTube!).

Or try doing a google search for Java and the topic. For example you could try "Phase Change Java". And see what you find. There are hundreds of different applets or internet programs you can link in.
