Types of Chemical Reactions (January 8, 2009)

For the beginning of class, we started with marking the homework (balancing equations worksheets). Went over a few examples that were a bit tricky, but overall the assignment was straight foward.

>6 TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS< style="font-weight: bold;">Synthesis A+B--->C
Ca + P4 ---> 2Ca3P2

2) Decomposition AB ---> A + B
*Always assume the products are elements*
2KClO3 ---> 2KCl + 3O2

3) Single Replacement A + BX ---> B + AX
*Components must always have a metal and a non-metal*
2NaI + Br2 ---> 2NaBr + I2

4) Double Replacement AB + XY ---> AY + XB
MgCl2 + K2SO4 ---> MgSO4 + 2KCl

5) Neutralization
*Products include water (H2O) and ionic salt. Between acids and bases*
HCl + NaOH----> NaCL + H2O

6) Combustion (burning)
*There are 2 types: Metallic and hydro-carbon. Metallic is basically like synthesis; hydro-carbon always result with the products CO2 and H2O*
CH4 + 2O2 ---> CO2 2H2O (Hydro-carbon)
2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO (Metallic)
